  1. dust: Small, particulate matter.
  2. Astronomers are not exactly certain
  3. of the composition of dust in space
  4. but consider graphites and silicates
  5. strong possibilities. Dust is important
  6. to astronomy because it interacts with
  7. light and can obscure or scatter it,
  8. thus interfering with the perception
  9. of a celestial object. Dust is often
  10. concentrated into lanes, visible as
  11. dark bands cutting across galaxies and
  12. bright nebulae, which are so dense
  13. they block light from our view.
